Act of Commitment
Other common terms: attachment, bound, tied.
An old, almost outdated practice that is rarely taught to new Sanguines, the Act is still recognized as a marriage between a Sanguine and human female. It involved the replacement of the human’s blood with the Sanguine’s. While this doesn’t make the female immortal, the aging process slows and eventually stops.

Bagger
The slang term for a Sanguine who consumes bagged blood from a Depository.

Black cloth
A covering of thick, dark cloth, commonly linen, used to shield a Sanguine from sunlight. While not as completely effective in bright sunlight, it is an option for cloudy days or when the sun has not fully risen.

Claiming
Recognized as a full commitment by most modern day Sanguines, claiming is accomplished by the Sanguine feeding from the female’s femoral artery for the first time. Afterwards, it is understood that the female belongs to the Sanguine and others feeding from her in no longer allowed.
Human equivalent: going steady or becoming engaged.

Companions
A term for a Sanguine and human who are exclusive to one another, either by claiming or by the Act of Commitment.

Connection
The first step in the companionship process.

Database
A listing of all donors registered with each Sanguine establishment.

Donor-or supplier
Humans who give blood for Sanguine consumption. This can be done by either giving anonymously at a blood drive or hospital or by going to a Sanguine establishment to become registered as a live donor.

Feeding Rooms
Rooms within an establishment specifically designed for feeding. Most establishments forbid feeding outside the rooms and are to be kept locked when in use.

Femoral artery
Artery located on the inside of the thigh. It is the only part of a female that a Sanguine cannot feed from unless the Sanguine is claiming her for a companion. The pheromones released by the Sanguine alert others that the human is now off limits until she chooses to break the companionship.

Glazing
A type of hypnosis that allows the Sanguine to have control of the human mind. Frowned upon by Sanguines now, it is still very popular among Sectarians.

Non-Sanguine friendly
Among communities and cities within a state, a non-Sanguine friendly community means that Sanguines are not only prohibited from living there, but their traveling through and visitations are closely monitored.

Plasma Shock
Characterized by grayish eye color, bleeding from the lower eyelids, extreme lethargy, slurred speech and feverish skin. Causes include over-exposure to the sun, not feeding enough or by TBS. If left untreated, is almost always fatal.

Purist
A Sanguine who refuses to drink blood from a Depository. They feel drinking straight from the human vein is not only the safest, but the healthiest way to feed.

Reigning Elder
The oldest Sanguine (at least five hundred years old) on record in a territory is appointed Reigning Elder. Duties include enforcement of all laws according to the Treaty, registering new Sanguines and companions, and overseeing the Sanguine establishments.

Sanguine establishment
Where Purists and humans meet for the purpose of feeding and/or companionship.

Sanguine-friendly
Community or city that is fully open to Sanguines.

Sanguine Sanctioned Community
A community in which only Sanguines are allowed to live. No humans allowed.

Sectarian
Unlike other Sanguines, Sectarians enjoy the thrill of hunting and killing humans. Considered extremely dangerous, the Militia watches them closely. Even Sanguines and Purists police them in order to keep peace.

Stages of Sanguine Development – referred from date of creation, not biological age.

-Baby or infant-A Sanguine less than a year old. At this stage, the Sanguine has yet to develop his new, keener senses. Living without supervision of his creator for guidance can result in an untrained Sanguine running wild, which is very dangerous.
-Young: Less than five years old. Can live alone, unsupervised, most senses are developed, but not to their full potential.
-Mature: Over five years old.
-Old: Over one hundred years old.
-Elder: Over five hundred years old. Eligible to be Reigning Elder of their territory.

Tainted Blood Systemia
A risk only to Baggers, it is contracted from drinking bagged blood that has spoiled from coming in contact with oxygen too long. Always fatal.

Typing Machine
Machine in all Sanguine establishments which takes a human blood sample and registers it in the club’s database along with the human’s information for future reference.

Virgin
Slang for untasted, meaning a new female to the club who has not yet donated. Many, Purists and Sectarians alike, consider it a pleasure to taste virgin blood.
